Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know the password?
Yes. This tool removes the password from a PDF you can already open — it does not crack or guess passwords. If you don't know the password, the tool can't help you.
Is it legal to remove a PDF password?
Removing a password from a PDF you own or have permission to modify is fine. Removing the password from someone else's protected document without authorization may not be — that's between you and them.
Are my files or password sent anywhere?
No. The PDF and the password stay in your browser. All decryption happens locally via WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded.
What encryption types are supported?
All standard PDF encryption schemes: AES-256 (PDF 2.0), AES-128 (PDF 1.6+), and the older RC4 variants. If a viewer can open it with the password, this tool can decrypt it.
Why is the unlocked file a slightly different size?
qpdf rewrites the file structure during decryption — that often changes the byte count slightly. The PDF content is identical.
