Password Protect PDFs Without Uploading

Lock any PDF with a password and control what viewers can do — print, copy text, or edit. Encryption uses AES-256, the same standard banks and governments rely on. Everything happens in your browser. Your file and your password never leave your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is the encryption actually secure?

Yes. We use AES-256 — the same algorithm Adobe Acrobat uses for high-security PDFs and what's required by PDF 2.0. It's considered cryptographically strong and is approved for protecting classified information by the US government.

Where is my password stored?

Nowhere. The password is sent into the PDF itself during encryption and then discarded. We don't keep it, log it, or transmit it. There's no server to leak from.

Can I recover the password if I forget it?

No. That's the point of encryption. If you forget the password, the PDF cannot be opened — there's no backdoor. Use a password manager.

What's the difference between blocking printing and blocking copying?

These are separate PDF permission flags. Blocking printing prevents the viewer from printing or saving as a new PDF. Blocking copying prevents text selection and clipboard copy. Blocking editing prevents annotations and modifications. You can mix and match.

Will the protected PDF open on any device?

Yes. The output is a standard PDF that opens in Adobe Reader, Apple Preview, Chrome, Firefox, mobile PDF apps — anywhere. Each viewer prompts for the password.

Can I add a password to a PDF that's already password-protected?

Unlock it first using our Remove PDF Password tool, then re-protect with new settings. The tool prevents accidental double-encryption.
